repair - wallwart power supply

Last update: Fri Apr 17 21:56:23 2026
The camera in the garden bugged as it does once in a while: camera working but the NW stack is down and unreachable. So I pull the ladder out, climb, and go for an old school "hard reset" by plugging out and in again the wallwart.... at least that was the plan, because when I pulled it out, I ended with the body of the wallwart in my hand and the pins stuck in the power cable!

After a little cursing and sweating, I cut the power and get the plug back. It works, only the seam that connects the body (standard) and the plate that has the pins (to customize per country) failed at the seam. No glue, so I guess the sound-welding failed. Did I mention I bought this camera on Amazon but pretty sure you can have it on Aliexpress?
So after some more cursing, I decided to do one stone 2 birds: reuse the Sonoff Wifi controllable switch that was sleeping in my drawer for years, so that not only I can still fring AC to the wallwart, but I can now do the reset remotely when needed! Of course I'm expecting that my nearly 10 years old (!) Sonoff will not betray me.
Just wired a couple 20AWG wires between the OUT of the Sonoff and the wallwart, it works. Put back the lid on the wallwart minus the power pins and plus a hole for the wires and a sizeable dose of vinyl tape around it.

I used the occasion to update the code of the Sonoff and make a custom ON/OFF web app that is absolutely ugly yet functional. And it can have a "label", in case I become fan of this solution, I'll be able to see which remote activated switch I'm talking to.
